(Papaver somniferum) At our seed farm, the plush, pink, full double blooms of this self-sowing annual garner a lot of attention. Its ruffled pink flower heads reach 4" across, and after flowering, the seed pods can be used in dried arrangements. This family heirloom from Juliana Beiwel was first sown in Diane Ott Whealy’s garden at Seed Savers Exchange’s Heritage Farm in the 1990s, where it blooms between late spring and summer. All plant parts except the seeds are toxic.

Learn To Grow It

Direct seeding is preferable, as poppies do not like to have their roots disturbed. Sow seeds outdoors in the early spring when the soil is still cool and light frost is possible. Can also be sown in the fall just before the ground freezes. Plants will tolerate poor soil.
