This heirloom kale started in the United States, moved to Ireland, and came back again! It was donated to SSE by Shane Murphy of California, who obtained it from the Irish Seed Savers Association. Charlie Hughes, of County Mayo, Ireland, has grown this variety since the 1930's and gave it to Irish Seed Savers in 1993. Charlie received it from his father Owen, who obtained it from a neighbor who had brought it to Ireland from America.

Learn To Grow It

This crop can be direct seeded into the garden 3-5 weeks before the last frost date, or you can start seedlings indoors around the same time. Transplant seedlings out after the danger of frost has passed.

Space your plants or seeds 14-18 inches apart in well fertilized soil. Plant your seeds 1/4-3/4 in. deep.
 

If you want to use this crop or fresh eating harvest the small, young leaves. The outer leaves of the plant can be harvested for cooking greens as the plant grows.

Mulching the soil around this crop can help protect the plant and keep roots cool and moist. In frost-free zones, this crop can be grow throughout the fall and winter.
